Leandro Mendoza Artagaveitia (Ramos Mejia,Buenos Aires,1976) is a director, artist and circus designer. He is currently the artistic director of the Trapezi Festival, Fira del Circ de Catalunya, a festival which is considered to be the most important in Spain.

He initially trained in Buenos Aires at the Escuela de Circo Criollo of the Videla brothers in the 90’s. Later he settled in Barcelona where he joined the circus school of Rogelio Rivel as a member of the training staff in 2000. The following year he created the Curtcirkit Festival of Montgat – Barcelona. He directed this festival jointly with Jose Antonio Hernandez “Joselito” for a decade. He was one of the founding members of the Circ de Nadal de Vilanova i la Geltru between 2004/2007. This Circ de Nadal (winter circus) was created at the La Vela centre, a place of residence for circus companies. He was appointed technical director 2008 and later artistic director 2011 2012 of La Central del Circ de Barcelona.

He started his own company Ciclicus with Tanja Haupt in 2009 in Barcelona. With this company they created their first show called Ciclicus (2009) which was directed by Joan Busquets. It was a small scale show aimed at a wideR audience. Later he created La Tartana 2014, a travelling show. Street theater performance which is still on tour. These first shows will pave the way for his new contemporary circus shows. In these, nature plays a key role in the staging and the music is always live-performance, rendering the show organic and emotional in its essence. The next show “Retalls” was premiered in the Mercat de Les Flors 2013 and produced by the Festival Grec. This show opened a new path in his career as a stage creator/director. “Pals” (2015) was coproduced with the Festival Grec de Barcelona, the Buenos Aires “Polo Circo” and the Ministry of Culture of the city of Buenos Aires. This show was awarded with the Special Jury prize of the ZirKolika festival in 2015. He has also directed the circus show using natural fibre material called “Guadual” (2016). This was a production from the Teatro Sanchez Aguilar of Guayaquil Ecuador. The show was awarded the “Ciutat de Barcelona de Circ” prize in 2016. During the celebration of La Merce de Barcelona towards the end of summer 2017, he premiered “Petita historia de un gran paisatje”. A large scale show in keeping with his earlier productions though highlighting the essence of circus generations and their exchanges.

He is currently working as a circus consultant for the Teatre Lliure de Barcelona production of Henry Miller’s play “The smile at the food of the ladder”  directed by Ramon Simo.
